Introduction to Scrum
Learn the right way to implement Scrum from a Certified Scrum Master. Scrum sometimes is mistaken for an SDLC methodology. Instead it is a "framework" that can be inserted into any methodology, even Waterfall. The word "Scrum" is borrowed from the team sport of Rugby, which is similar to football. In football, the team forms into a "huddle" prior to the play, and most times, the coach sends instructions into the huddle from the sidelines. A "scrum" is similar to a huddle, with one distinction. The coach does not send instructions in from the sidelines. The Scrum team makes its own decisions.
Scrum empowers the software development team, along with the stakeholders, to make decisions based upon knowledge from "within". Scrum teams usually do not have Project Managers. Instead they have Scrum Masters whose job it is to overcome impediments to the forward progress of the Scrum team. Topics to be discussed:
- Daily Scrum meetings
- The three questions
- Burndown charts
- Sprints
- Time Boxes
- Flavors of Scrum
- Tools that support Scrum
- The "Scrumerfall" Trap
- The importance of training
Nel Nash-Hooks has been a Software Test Engineer for 13 years. In her early career as a software instructor and technical writer, she often wondered what she wanted to be when she "grew up". She became a test engineer by accident and found her calling. She has experience testing in Web environments, middleware, and client/server and holds the CSTE and CSM certifications.
